Introduction

As online business owners or marketing managers, we all understand the importance of having an optimized and working Google Merchant Center. Google is constantly updating its policies and it can be overwhelming to keep up with them. I have been helping businesses optimize their Google Shopping Feeds for many years and have never seen “Too generic landing pages” issue in my life up until now. Whenever I am challenged with a suspension warning or disapproved products by Google, I analyze both the feed and the website. Here is an effective solution for anyone dealing with too generic landing page issues.

Google Is As Always Not Helpful

Google’s messages regarding any issues be it with Misrepresentation or too generic landing pages, its always the same, not helpful. I am sure you are seeing the same message as the screenshot below:

When you click on “How to fix Generic page,” you will not find anything helpful. Especially when your product pages are working. After reading the page and comparing my client’s product page to specifications, I could not come up with any violations. As you know, Contacting Google support via chat is useless since they will not be able to do anything for you. Most of the checks are done by Google’s AI and humans can do nothing against those suspensions. You must understand what Artificial Intelligence is looking for in order to get your products approved again.

Useful Articles on Google

To solve the “Too Generic Landing Pages Issue” you must go beyond what Google asks you to read. One helpful article was the About landing page requirements. The page has hundreds of requirements for your landing page, which you should have if you want to provide your visitors with a superb experience. I would like to summarize some of the most important attributes your product page should have.

Some of the most obvious:

  • Make sure your product page is live
  • Only send traffic to your own website (link indicated in your GMC)
  • Make sure all the prices, availability, condition, etc match with what you are telling Google
  • Your link should send customers directly to the product page, not the homepage or categories page
  • Make sure “Buy It Now’ button works

What to check within your feed:

  • [link] attribute – ensure the correct structure is generated by your feed.
  • [ads_redirect] attribute – make sure it is leading to the correct product page.

Always pay attention to what Google is finding on your product page. Sometimes, you will have to update your metadata in order to comply with Google’s policies.

Once you are positive that the correct link is being used and all the other attributes are correct, you can contact Google to ask for a manual review. I am sure you will find some of the attributes not matching your landing page. Correct them and your products will be automatically reviewed by Google and approved.
